***Pre-recorded*** Deliberate Practice: What? When? Why?
Think back to Final Exam time when you were a student! How did it feel to look at content covered back in September? As you began your review, did it feel like you were learning it for the first time? Although math teachers can see the connections between outcomes and units, many students struggle to make these same connections. They don’t often see how what they learned in one unit is helping them two units later, or maybe how what they did NOT learn in one unit is hindering them two units later. Retention in math is crucial. Conceptual understanding is equally crucial, but left unpracticed, even deeply learned skills can become rusty. Deliberate Practice is a solution to the lack of retention problem. It keeps all content current, relevant, and connected to whatever is being learned in the moment. Join this workshop to uncover what Deliberate Practice can do for you and your students. Please have paper and pen/pencil.

Numeracy and Well-being in Your Schoolyard: Exploring Math Concepts Through Fun Outdoor Activities
What do numeracy, well-being and the outdoors have to do with each other? Everything! Studies show that children, especially those with the most challenging behaviours, feel more relaxed outside and are therefore more open to deep learning. This workshop will demonstrate how to use the outdoor learning environment to provide authentic and rich opportunities to develop a range of numeracy skills. Whether you’re teaching basic operations, estimation, magnitude, measurement, patterns, shapes, or space, it’s more fun and meaningful to do this outside where students will naturally be happier and more engaged. We’ll also explore how Indigenous perspectives and outdoor learning can promote your students’ well-being by fostering a sense of place and helping them feel connected to themselves, their classmates, and Mother Earth. Weather and venue permitting, we will strive to hold this session outside so please dress appropriately.

***Pre-recorded*** What We can Know about Math Teachers’ Participation in a PLN
This study investigates the interactive conversations in a Professional Learning Network (PLN) to understand its affordances. It used interpretive inquiry as the methodology and complexity thinking as the theoretical framework. One PLN was targeted to collect the archived data from which four blog posts and their comments were selected as illustrative examples. The results presented the diverse conversation structures through conversation weaving and conversation expanding as well as the multiple types of knowing emergent from the conversations including: mathematics-for-teaching, beliefs about teaching, social relationships, blog resources, and recounting experiences. The knowing of mathematics-for-teaching was enacted in the moments of mathematics teachers’ participation in the conversations. The other four types of knowing were implicated with the emergence of mathematics-for-teaching, the teachers’ participation in the PLN, and the evolvement of the PLN itself. However, they have not yet been explored in the predominant research on teachers’ disciplinary knowledge of mathematics.

STEM in Stories: Connecting Curriculum to Popular Culture
The word “STEM” (an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) has become commonplace in the science classroom, but we don't often stop to think about what it means. In this interactive and collaborative session, we will define STEM and demonstrate how it can be leveraged to guide authentic learning. With the help of the presenters’ varied scientific backgrounds, participants will realize that STEM is all around them – including in children’s stories! By using storybooks in our teaching, we can make topics more relevant and exciting to students. This reinforces their learning by connecting it to topics they are already interested in and inspires them to continue looking for the STEM in everyday life. We will lead participants through our unique strategy of teaching STEM topics through stories. Participants will collaborate to develop hands-on classroom activities that connect science and math learning outcomes to storybooks.

Shake Up Your Primary Fact Fluency Practice
Students need engaging practice tied to strategies, not rote memorization. Come prepared to shake, dance and learn our favorite activities for working on early numeracy concepts including: subitizing, odd even, counting, number sequence, place value to 100, 1,000, patterning, operational strategies including doubles, double +1, make 10, 20, commutative properties of + and X, associative property for +, count on and back, and more. Each activity will start with a quick 30 second brain break. Participants will then see how this quick transition to a math fluency activity engages students and helps deepen their understanding. Student samples, gameboards, journal extensions will be shared. Ideas are easy to differentiate so that all students can be challenged and achieve success. Activities can be used whole class, or in small groups or centers.

***Pre-recorded*** Teaching Algebra With Meaning! Less Rules, More Number Sense
Algebra is often taught as being merely about moving numbers and variables around and balancing equations. Classes are often focused on following a procedure that students are taught that are meant to help them get answers instead of learning to build and investigate algebraic relationships. We need to help them learn and trust the math rather than rely on us to tell them what to do. The hard part about algebra is building the equations which we just give to them. So they miss out on the real study of algebra. Answers are important but they are not the math. The math happens on the way to the answer. In this workshop, teachers will be asked to look at algebra in a very different light by using “jumps” on an open number line. We will use a model and interesting contexts that allow us to talk about much more than the answer. We will look at the big ideas behind algebra and show how kids can both see and show the math rather than just memorize and reproduce a procedure.
