The shift to emergency remote teaching in early 2020 as a result of COVID-19 was the shake-up of a career. It forced us to rethink teaching, engagement, curriculum, assessment, standardardized testing, and so much more. In reworking every facet of our practice, we were forced to consider the rationale for all parts of our practice. Which things work? What needs tweaking? What's utterly broken? In this session, we will discuss the way schools responded to the Spanish Flu of a century ago and the lessons learned in the wake of that pandemic. We will examine similarities and differences between the response of schools to that virus and this one. We will talk together about the challenges have been for us so far (in emergency remote learning and into the 2020-21 school year). We will close by considering life post-COVID. When all of this craziness is over, what things should be go back to doing? What things should we tweak? What things should we consider burning down and building anew?
