From Concept to Clip: Effective Use of Movies in the Classroom

Can you guess which movie is the most frequently taught to business students across North America? (The answer is not Wall Street.) Have you ever heard of or used Omeleto as a teaching tool? This multimedia workshop will discuss in detail the proven teaching strategy of using movies as a teaching tool, whether in language arts and socials (logical homes) or mathematics and science (less logical, perhaps). With over 20 years of experience in post-secondary classrooms (much of it teaching teachers), Dr. Dyer will discuss the research into why teaching with movies works, how to best align movie choices with an outcomes-based curriculum, how to set the stage for incorporating movies into a classroom setting (linking concept to clip), how to flip the script from viewer to maker, and the challenges that will need to be negotiated when engaging this strategy. He will also model a few brief teaching moments using both familiar and unfamiliar film clips as well as share some time-tested titles from his portfolio to spark ideas for your classroom.
